About this role
The Paralegal is responsible for supporting attorneys in all family law matters. This role includes drafting and managing legal documents, maintaining case files, coordinating filings across multiple jurisdictions, and assisting with court preparation. The ideal candidate is highly organized, detail-oriented, and experienced in handling complex financial documentation and case management activities.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Draft, format, and manage legal documents including pleadings, correspondence, and discovery materials
Maintain organized and up-to-date case files, both electronic and physical
Coordinate and track deadlines for multiple cases across jurisdictions
Maintain case calendars, including hearings, filings, and court appearances
Prepare and file legal documents in multiple state jurisdictions
Ensure compliance with court rules, deadlines, and filing requirements
Provide support during court proceedings and hearings as needed
Prepare and organize financial statements (including income/expense forms and balance sheets)
Assist in gathering, analyzing, and summarizing financial records relevant to family law matters
Gather and organize large volumes of documents in discovery
Prepare written discovery requests and responses
Summarize depositions, hearings, and trial transcripts
Manage attorney calendars, including scheduling meetings, court dates, and deadlines
Coordinate meetings, client communications, and case-related logistics
Provide general administrative support to attorneys
Assist with trial preparation, including compiling exhibits and trial notebooks
Perform cite checking and document formatting as needed
Assist with additional duties as assigned
Support special projects and firm initiatives
QUALIFICATIONS:
Excellent interpersonal skills with all levels of firm personnel, clients, and vendors
Ability multitask and handle competing deadlines and responsibilities
Strong organizational and research skills, including internet research
Strong client service orientation, excellent communication, and decision-making skills
Ability to apply a broad basic knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures of the law as it applies to family law practice
Experience working with computer databases, word processing, spreadsheet programs in litigation support, legal research and library applications
Ability to work both independently and as a team player
EDUCATION AND /OR EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school with a certification as a paralegal
Three to five years of experience in a law firm, particularly in a family law practice
Familiarity with DC, Virginia, and/or Maryland jurisdictions is preferred
