Join Courier Newsroom - an organization that drives journalism and empowers communities.

At Courier Newsroom, we’re reinventing local media to inform and empower communities through impactful reporting. Our mission is rooted in civic engagement and equity—and we’re growing fast.

We are presently looking for a CONTRACT REPORTER (Independent Consultant) in NEW HAMPSHIRE.

COURIER Newsroom is committed to building an inclusive workplace that values diverse perspectives and lived experiences. We strongly encourage women, people of color, individuals with disabilities, LGBTQ+ candidates, and those from all backgrounds to apply. As an equal opportunity employer, we strive to break down barriers and ensure every team member feels seen, heard, and supported.

Position Overview

The consultant will produce original reporting for our New Hampshire newsroom, The Granite Post, reporting into the Underwriting & Sponsored Content department. The consultant will produce two original, fact-based political story packages per week on New Hampshire politics and policy.

The consultant will deliver stories that connect state and local policy decisions to the real lives of New Hampshire residents, advancing COURIER’s pro-democracy coverage goals. This is a fully remote, contract role for a New Hampshire-based contract reporter (independent consultant) through Feb. 28, 2027.

Deliverables: 2 original story packages per week focused on New Hampshire politics, policy, and civic life, with a clear emphasis on how these issues affect everyday people, as assigned. A “package” includes 1 source-driven article and 1 related presenter-led video made using a provided template.

To produce these deliverables, you will be expected to:

  • Refine angles, incorporate feedback, and ensure all reporting meets COURIER’s journalistic standards and style.
  • Conduct rigorous research, interviews, and fact-checking, including outreach to impacted community members, subject-matter experts, and key political actors.

Payment: You will be compensated $560 per package.

Ideal Profile

The ideal consultant is an experienced reporter with a strong background in political or public-affairs journalism and deep familiarity with New Hampshire’s political landscape. They are comfortable generating original story ideas, building sources, and translating complex policies and political dynamics into clear, accessible coverage that resonates with news-avoidant and lightly engaged audiences. They don’t hesitate to get in front of the camera, reporting the news for an audience of Granite Staters. They’re comfortable using creative tools to generate social content. They are values-driven, eager to use their reporting to strengthen democracy, hold powerful actors to account, and highlight solutions and impacts in communities across New Hampshire. Experience working with campaign-style content is a plus.

Qualifications

  • Lives in New Hampshire
  • 3+ years of reporting experience in journalism, with a focus on politics, policy, or public affairs (state and local experience strongly preferred)
  • Demonstrated ability to consistently report, write, and file multiple stories per week on deadline
  • Strong reporting and writing skills, including sourcing, interviewing, research, and fact-checking, with a commitment to COURIER’s journalistic standards and style
  • Deep familiarity with New Hampshire politics, institutions, and key issues
  • On-camera experience with social media videos, and an aptitude for creating them
  • Alignment with COURIER’s mission to provide fact-based, people-centered reporting that strengthens civic participation and democracy

Who We Are
