California Licensure and Legal Requirements
In California, esthetics is regulated by the Board of Barbering and Cosmetology (BBC). Injections of neuromodulators, dermal fillers, biostimulators, vitamins, and IV therapy are the practice of medicine. An esthetician license does not allow any injection, even inside a physician-owned medical spa and under a physician's direct supervision (Bus. & Prof. Code §§ 2052, 7320). This role does not include injecting. The table below lists the license required for this role and the licenses required for anyone who injects at our practice.
Requirements for this esthetician role
- Active, current California esthetician (or cosmetology) license, verifiable on the DCA license lookup and displayed at your workstation.
- To qualify for the license: be at least 17 years old, have completed the 10th grade or its equivalent, complete 600 hours of training at a BBC-approved school, and pass the state written exam. Out-of-state applicants may qualify by reciprocity if licensed for 3 of the last 5 years without discipline.
- Renew the license every 2 years. California does not require continuing education for estheticians, but we expect ongoing advanced training.
- Work only within esthetician scope, which is limited to the non-living outer layer of the skin. Estheticians may not inject anything, use lasers or IPL, perform microneedling or medium or deep peels, remove moles or skin tags, or apply prescription products, even under physician supervision.
- Follow BBC health and safety rules (Cal. Code Regs., tit. 16) and the practice's written protocols.
- Carry or be covered by professional liability insurance, as provided by Skin Genius Beauty Lounge or held individually.
Preferred Qualifications
- 3+ years as a medical esthetician with an established client following in the Inland Empire.
- Experience with medical-grade skincare lines and building retail regimens.
- Experience assisting providers with injectable, laser, and microneedling patients.
- Advanced credentials such as CIDESCO or NCEA certification.
- CPR/BLS certification.
- Bilingual English/Spanish.
