UPMC Corporate is hiring a Paralegal, Intermediate to join our team at the US Steel Tower! This role will work standard business hours Monday through Friday. The position will have a hybrid schedule with work from home and onsite requirements.
The Paralegal, Intermediate independently applies knowledge of the legal system and substantive and procedural law in providing work of a legal nature under the supervision of the attorneys of the UPMC Corporate Legal Department. Responsibilities will include substantive legal knowledge, management, and leadership skill and organizational ability. This work requires knowledge of legal concepts, federal, state, and local laws and the ability to research complex legal matters. The Corporate Paralegal, Expert provides legal assistance and enables the UPMC attorneys to deliver legal services more efficiently and economically.
Responsibilities:
Pre-Suit Claims Administration


Manage high-volume pre-suit medical professional and general liability claims across multiple regions and insured entities
Maintain comprehensive tracking of all open pre-suit matters, including status reporting
Interface directly with plaintiff attorneys and pro se patients
Draft initial responses to Letters of Representation
Secure and validate medical authorizations for legal communication
Support reporting of claims and suits to captive insurance entities

Medical Records & Financial Analysis


Obtain, organize, and produce medical records and billing documentation
Analyze medical bills and provide reporting to support settlement strategy
Ensure timely and accurate production of records to opposing counsel

Legal Document Drafting & Case Support


Draft tolling agreements and full/final releases for attorney review
Monitor and follow up on execution of settlement documents
Draft general correspondence in support of pre-suit matters

Litigation Support


Support outside counsel with document production, billing records, and provider information
Obtain and monitor court docket activity
Interface with court personnel to obtain information and filings
Assist with documentation management within claims systems
Assist in the transition and implementation of Origami Patient Event Reporting and Claim Management System

Litigation Hold Management


Issue, track, and manage litigation holds across matters
Respond to document custodian inquiries
Close out litigation holds upon case completion

Program Leadership / Systemwide Support


Support expansion and administration of litigation hold processes across multiple regions
Provide guidance and support to claims and litigation teams

Executive Support


Coordinate calendars, meetings, deadlines, and trial schedules for in-house counsel, accountants, auditors, actuaries, captive board members, insurance regulators, insurance managers and brokers, and MCARE
Prepare materials for executive-level meetings
Manage inbound and outbound physical mail
Process travel, expense, and PTO requests
Serve as a central coordination point to ensure deadlines and reporting obligations are met
High School and five years of experience as a legal assistant, OR associate's degree and three years of experience as a legal assistant, OR Paralegal certification and three years of experience as a legal assistant, OR Bachelor's degree and two years of experience as a legal assistant.
Must have the ability to problem solve and make decisions independently within agreed parameters of attorney supervision and consistent with professional rules of responsibility for the attorney practice of law.
Excellent communication and organizational skills.
Computer operating mandatory with knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Power Point, Access, Westlaw, Adobe, Pacer, and internet applications.
Requisite typing skills of 60 to 70 wpm with a strong command of the English language and excellent proofreading skills.
